ABC Family Pediatricians

Barbara Katz, M.D.
Pediatrician
Fellowship-Trained in Adolescent Medicine

What is adolescent medicine?
"Adolescent medicine is dedicated to the physical and emotional health of teenagers. Adolescents have concerns that are different from children or adults. I care for children and adolescents until age 21. In addition to caring for infants and younger children, I have training and experience in the particular needs of teenagers.

"Healthy adolescents require an approach to wellness, both in terms of physical health and emotional development, that considers their evolving maturation. In addition to routine care and common adolescent problems, I handle acne, headaches, fatigue, weight concerns and various psychological issues. I also provide gynecologic care and deal with menstrual problems."

Why did you choose pediatrics?
"It is very satisfying to make a difference in the lives of children. I enjoy working with families and I enjoy the challenge of helping parents navigate the child-raising years. It has been a pleasure to watch children grow into wonderful and interesting young adults."

And your focus on teenagers and adolescent health?
"I find working with teenagers to be particularly rewarding. It can be a challenging stage of development for the family and the teenager. I have always had a particular interest in working with adolescents, and sought additional training in adolescent medicine after completing my pediatric residency."

What's the most important advice you can give to moms and dads?
"Trust your judgment. You know your child best. Then find a professional you can trust to help you and your family."

What do you do in your spare time?
"I enjoy activities with my dogs, which are pugs. They are certified therapy dogs, and I take them to local schools and to Lehigh Valley Hospital. I'm also involved in obedience-training activities - both with my dogs and in helping others train their dogs.

"I also bicycle and tap dance, and I scuba dive on vacations. My husband is also a pediatrician, and we enjoy traveling together."
