ABC Family Pediatricians

Debra Lynne Carter, M.D.
Pediatrician

How long have you been with ABC Family Pediatricians?
"I've worked at ABC about 10 years. I'm originally from Laurel, Md., and attended medical school and pediatric residency training at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. One of my colleagues at Hopkins came to the Lehigh Valley and encouraged me to consider the area a few years later. I have a great-aunt and uncle who have lived in Allentown for over 40 years, so I grew up visiting the area as a child and decided to make it my new home."

What brought you to pediatrics?
"I've always enjoyed children and have been fascinated by the stages of development. In sixth grade, we were assigned to interview someone in a profession we were interested in. I did my 'career report' on a pediatrician and ever since then, I knew I wanted to be a pediatrician."

What's your style in working with parents?
"I view parents as my primary resource for information about their child. I look to parents to provide as much information as possible so that I can treat their child in the most appropriate and effective manner. I like to get to know parents on a more personal basis so that I can help them with a wider variety of issues -- from behavior problems to social difficulties to medical issues."

What's the most important advice you can give to moms and dads?
"Listen to your children and stay intimately involved in their lives -- even when it seems as though they don't want you to. Children need love, support and guidance from their parents -- starting at birth and continuing for the rest of their lives. One of my favorite little poems (unknown author) summarizes my philosophy on children:

When a child speaks, listen.
When a child laughs, smile.
When a child dreams, believe.
When a child hurts, heal.

I'll help with the last part."
