ABC Family Pediatricians

Don Levick, M.D.
Pediatrician

You helped start the Eastern PA Down Syndrome Center. How did you become involved with the group?
"I became involved through ABC Peds. I was caring for several families with children with Down Syndrome, and two mothers approached me about starting a center. This was at the time we were building the Health Center at Trexlertown, and I thought, what a great place to put it. The Down Syndrome Parent Network was the driving force for the center, and I coordinated getting it up and running."

"The group then asked me if I would like to participate, and so I volunteer at the center two mornings a month. I provide evaluation and counseling to children and their families, make sure social issues are addressed and that they know of resources they are entitled to. Interested parents can learn more at epdsc.org."

How long have you been with ABC?
"I started in 1985. Currently I’m here one day a week. The rest of my time is spent in my roles as past president of the medical staff, and physician liaison for information services. I was the first pediatrician to be elected president of the medical staff. But wherever my roles take me, I plan to continue seeing patients."

What has changed in pediatrics in the time you have been practicing?
"The level of education of the families. They are much more informed and well-prepared, which makes for a more collaborative effort. I enjoy that."

What is the most important advice you can give moms and dads?
"Listen to your children. Make sure you set boundaries, but allow them to make decisions within those boundaries."

What do you do for fun?
"I play basketball and exercise a fair amount. I’m married to Mary Stahl (another ABC pediatrician), and we have three children. So a lot of our activities revolve around the childrens’ activities. I’ve coached all three of them in basketball, and maintained websites for their soccer teams."
