David Meehan, M.D.
Pediatrician
How long have you been with ABC Family Pediatricians?
"I moved to the Lehigh Valley from Arizona in 1996 with my family. Both my wife's and my family are from the northeastern section of the state, and we wanted to be closer to our relatives. I enjoy the area because it is family-friendly and close to a variety of outdoor and cultural attractions."
What brought you to pediatrics?
"Pediatric medicine is such a joy that I can't think of anything better. It is a real privilege to observe a child's development from infancy through the teen years."
What is your philosophy in treating children?
"In order to treat a child effectively, it's important to actively listen to what the parents are saying. Pediatrics is more than not having disease. It's also behavior, development and safety. If we, as pediatricians, are effective, we can help parents raise a child who will turn into a healthy and happy adult."
In the time that you have been practicing, has pediatrics changed very much?
"In general, the art of raising children is much the same as ever. What changes is our ability to identify, and treat, some childhood conditions sooner allowing children to reach their highest potential. Also, children are more involved in sports and after-school programs, which means an increased concern over injury prevention. Societal changes also are allowing us to see some diseases in children formerly only seen in adults, such at type 2 diabetes.
"And more information is available to parent than ever before through television, print media and the Internet. Much of that information is erroneous. So a pediatrician needs to take care of a child's current problem, initiate prevention when necessary and serve as a trusted resource for parents."
