Deborah Miller, M.S.N., C.P.N.P.
Nurse Practitioner
Why did you become a nurse practitioner?
“My nursing career began as a staff nurse at
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. While caring for
children with complex surgical and medical conditions,
Iwas inspired to broaden my skills and knowledge to
become a better clinician. The pediatric clinical
specialist and nurse practitioner roles have provided
me with expanded opportunities to serve children and
their families both independently and collaboratively
as a professional member of the health care team.”
As a nurse practitioner, what kind of
patients do you see?
“My focus is primarily well child care, perhaps better known as “check-ups” or “physicals.” During these appointments for newborns through teenagers, I focus on four areas: developmental assessment, physical assessment, immunizations, and parent / patient education. My priority is to startwith the questions and concerns parents and children bring to the
appointment, and expand from there to topics relevant
to the age of the child or teen. In addition to well
child care, I also see sick children, diagnose and treat
common childhood illnesses and injuries. I am licensed
to prescribe non-controlled medications, order lab tests,
x-rays, and ancillaryservices such as speech, physical,
and occupational therapy.”
Should patients schedule appointments with
you directly?
"Yes, parents have a choice to schedule appointments
with me or with one of our pediatricians. Well child
appointments are usually scheduled in advance which
hopefully means parents can make these appointments
at times cnvenient for them."
