Elizabeth Goff, M.D.
Pediatrician
How long have you been with ABC?
"I've been with ABC Family Pediatricians over 15 years. My family is originally from the Lehigh Valley, but I was raised near New Haven, CT, because both my parents were neurophysiologists on the faculty at Yale. When I finished my residency at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, I wanted to move to Allentown to be near my large, extended family."
What's your style in working with parents?
"I see myself and the parent as a team-it's a collaborative effort. I have the medical knowledge and experience, but only the parent really knows his or her child best. There are often several options for any given problem. I'll be clear about what I would do if this were my child, but the parent often knows what will work best for the family. We'll get there together."
What's the most important advice you can give to moms and dads?
"As the mother of two small children, I really understand both the rich joys and the incredible stresses of parenting. When life gets nutty, I try to step back and ask myself two questions: 'What does my child really need in this moment?' (which is not necessarily what she wants), and 'What do I want my child to learn in this moment?' This is how I try to practice what I call 'mindful parenting.' And finally, I try to keep my sense of humor and not judge myself too harshly."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I have two daughters adopted from China, so my spare time is spent with them. This has naturally led me to develop a special interest in Chinese adoptions. I am available to consult with prospective parents to review medical records and prepare for travel. When the child arrives home, I provide a comprehensive evaluation and ongoing care."
