ABC Family Pediatricians

Elmer Long Jr., M.D.
Pediatrician

What changes have you seen in pediatrics since you've been practicing?
"The children are the same. But they have more fears and anxieties over world problems and what they see on TV. There are more school and peer problems. There's more competition for kids. So I spend more and more time talking to the children and their parents, sharing other children's and families' experiences.

"From a medical standpoint, we're lucky that there are fewer ailments thanks to immunizations."

What's the most important advice you can give to moms and dads?
"Enjoy your children. Spoil them at times, but keep them disciplined."

What's a first visit like for a parent and child?
"I ask lots of questions and spend time talking with the children, asking them about the toys they play with, video games, getting to know them. It gives us a rapport.

"Children are more talkative today, about what they like, what fears they have. And they're also a little smarter about what's wrong with them. 'Barney' and other TV programs teach them about health. They still don't like shots though."

How important are well visits?
"Very important. It's a chance for me to get know your child while he or she is well. And we can talk about school and what's going on in his or her life. Weight is a big issue. I talk about BMI--body mass index--with parents and kids. Childhood diabetes is a big worry. So it's important to watch weight and diet. I encourage a balance of both. The other half is exercise-getting them involved in the activities that they like to do."

And your philosophy with new moms?
"For me, newborns are one of the most enjoyable parts of being a pediatrician.

"Fuggie's (Dr. Fuggazzotto) philosophy and mine are the same. We try to anticipate questions. With TV, lectures and the Internet, it's easy for parents to get mixed signals. We also talk about breastfeeding a lot. It's very important. So we try to give tips and help so that it isn't a chore."

What do you do for fun?
"I travel with my wife. I love all sports, and I'm a huge Phillies and Eagles fan. I collect sports cards and memorabilia."
