ABC Family Pediatricians

Kerry Hood
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

What is your role as a pediatric nurse practitioner?
I am licensed to see children for well visits and minor injuries and illnesses. I also provide a great deal of supportive care and teaching. If you have well-baby questions, I’m your person! And I work with the parents in understanding preventive medicine measures.

When should parents make an appointment with you?
Our staff knows when it is appropriate for a family to see me, based on the need. In those cases, a staff member will let you know that I am available for the appointment. Or you can choose to see one of our pediatricians. At times you may see me, and I will then consult with the pediatrician.

If parents have any questions about how I can help them, I encourage them to ask me. I’m open to questions and feedback.

What role do you want parents to play during the appointment?
I hope they will be very active participants. They significantly help in the diagnosis when they paint a good picture of what’s going on at home and with their child. Most parents are tuned in to their children’s needs. The teen years are a little harder. There we need to listen to the adolescent.

What’s the most important advice you can give to parents?
Go with your gut feeling. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.

Also, remember that preventive medicine means following common sense practices. But it’s the common sense things that kids don’t want to do! So you have to enforce them, from the little things like dressing appropriately for the weather, to the bigger things, like car safety.
