Mary Stahl Levick, M.D.
Pediatrician
How is ABC Family Pediatricians different from other pediatric practices?
"We're unique because we have the five neighborhood offices, and the main office (Allentown Medical Center/AMC) is open 365 days a year. Our after-hours coverage is someone from our group-another ABC Family pediatrician.
"We also have triage nurses to answer the phone after hours. There are always pediatric R.N.'s standing by, specifically educated to answer your questions. Every phone call generates a typed message that is added to your child's file in the morning. Many parents find that valuable-they don't have to wake someone up to double check a dosage. It's nice to know someone is up and
waiting for your call. We're there all through the night.
"And we have comprehensive care from birth through adolescence. And if your child is hospitalized, care is provided by an ABC Family pediatrician, so there's tremendous continuity of care."
You have a special interest in the care of hospitalized patients. Do you have any advice
for parents who might have to admit a child?
"Yes. We encourage parents to stay with their children at the hospital. Here at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, all but three rooms in pediatrics are private, and all rooms have daybeds.
"If it's an elective admission, take a pre-hospital tour of the pediatric unit with your child. Meet our child-life therapist, who will help your child feel more comfortable about the hospital experience."
What's the most important advice you can give to parents?
"You're the expert on your own child. You should trust your own instincts."
What have you learned since you've been practicing pediatrics?
"Having three children has taught me more about parenting and pediatrics than four years of medical school and four years of residency."
What do you do in your spare time?
"My kids are involved in so many activities, that most often I'm 'Mom's Taxi Service'!"
