Moshe Markowitz, M.D.
Pediatrician
What brought you to medicine and pediatrics?
"I became interested in medicine in college because of my love for science and its
application to everyday life. Once I realized my interest in medicine, I knew right away
that I wanted to become a pediatrician. I have been working with children in summer camps and through tutoring from the time I was 12-13 years old. It just came naturally to me."
What brought you to Lehigh Valley Hospital and ABC Family Pediatricians?
"ABC Family Pediatricians offers a great opportunity to be part of a large medical group that provides quality care for its patients and offers a lot of support for its physicians. And as part of Lehigh Valley Hospital, the opportunity exists for teaching medical students, and I'd like to become a part of that over time. I also am impressed with the efficiency with which the practice is run on a daily basis."
What is your philosophy on treating children?
"My philosophy on medicine is in evolution, but there are certain things I realize about the way I practice medicine that I can share with parents. In general, I try to practice pediatrics by following the accepted practice guidelines that exist for various diseases. However, life doesn't always follow a flow chart, and there are situations where deviations from these guidelines must be made but still are medically appropriate choices. I try to be conservative when dealing with medical options that are more invasive and try alternative approaches first--provided the condition allows for them. Bedside manner goes a very long way. And I make that an important focus on my interactions with patients and their parents. I also want parents to know that I have a special interest in adoptions."
What do you do when you are not being a pediatrician?
"I'm very happily married. My wife, Lisa, is an accountant for a hedge-fund administrator.
"I am very passionate about baseball and football. Being that I am from
New York, I am a big Yankees and Jets fan, but now cheer on the Phillies and Eagles as well. I have played on the Schneider Children's Hospital's pediatric softball team and on the intramural basketball team as well. I'm always looking to join a softball team in one of the local leagues or coach Little League."
