ABC Family Pediatricians

Renee Morrow-Connelly, D.O.
Pediatrician

You are involved in the Eastern PA Down Syndrome Center, along with Dr. Levick.. How did you become involved with the group?
"I care for several Down syndrome patients at ABC Family Pediatricians/Laurys Station. One of my first patients with Down syndrome was experiencing surgical complications, and I became involved with the EPDSC by seeking resources for this patient. Through involvement, I gained a considerable amount of knowledge, which the center felt could certainly be of benefit to many families. I'm delighted to volunteer time there. I thoroughly love working with these patients. I have an hour-and-a-half for an appointment--it's wonderful!"

What brought you to osteopathic medicine and pediatrics?
"I chose osteopathic medicine because I believe in treating the patient as a whole person. I chose pediatrics because I believe in preventive medicine, and this can only be obtained by reaching patients early.

"I made my decision to be a pediatrician when I was 5 years old. At the time, I thought I wanted to be a nurse until I went on a field trip to a hospital in upstate New York, and I was told women can be physicians. I had received a poster of a boy running through the woods that said, 'Who will care for me?' and I decided then it would be me. This poster is now hanging in my son's room."

What has changed in pediatrics since you have been practicing?
"Parents are not able to be home as much, and I feel children are over-involved in activities. Family life has changed-everyone is too busy. I'm fortunate to be able to work part-time and to be able to spend time with my two sons. People ask me if I'll return to full-time status once they are older, but I think it's just as important to have time with them in their teens.

"I see a lot of adolescent depression today that I didn't see years ago. There's so much pressure and competition for teens."

What's the most important advice you can give to parents? "Listen to your child."

And what do you do for fun?
"I water and downhill ski, bike, run and play the piano. And of course, spend time with my family."
